Disco computer was formed back in mid 2006 by Tony Irvine, after his previous project Harold and Cindy Hospital had fallen through. His other project of the time RoboNERD! was then down to a solo performer. However, Tony knew that he had enough material cobbled together for two projects, and splitting the quirkier RoboNERD! set and the Disco Computer set into 2 bands, Disco Computer was born!
But it wasn’t until Vocalist Monika Ciura came on board towards the end of 2006 that things started to take shape. Wearing a set of mid 80’s influences on their sleeves, Disco Computer began gigging in March 2007 and began to earn a small but dedicated following before catastrophic equipment failure took them off the road in 2012.
In the time it took to replace the equipment (much of it FROM the 80s and 90s), Both Tony & Monika rediscovered their love of House music. Monika’s with Piano House and Tony’s with Acid House. Taking those influences and merging them into a fun late 80s/early 90s influenced sound, as well as Monika beginning to play keyboards as well, the re-writing of the set began in earnest, and the results paid off spectacularly!
In 2020, not too long after our first ever Facebook live performance back in July of that year, it was discovered that Monika had developed a particularly nasty strain of brain tumours, beginning her battle with cancer.
Sadly, Monika lost her battle
with cancer on July 4th, 2021.
After multiple discussions with her brother David, it was decided to keep Disco Computer going, partly for Tony’s sanity, but also in honour of Monika’s memory.
In late 2022 after placing numerous ads for a singer, Disco computer is joined by Nesina Viola.
The sound has changed to reflect that, with Nesina’s background in blues music and a vocal range a whole octave lower than Monika’s, Disco computer’s sound was always going to change.
And then, just to shake things up even further, in late 2023 Disco computer became a TRIO!
Chinese born Melburnian Lu Nie brings her not inconsiderable piano, synth and vocal skills to the fore. And needless to say we’re already incredibly excited about the things she’s already brought to the sound to Disco Computer…
Disco Computer will get your party pumping with it’s infectious collection of originals and covers in classic late 80s/Early 90s styles! Hopefully Disco Computer will soon be at a venue (Both physically and online) near you in the not so distant future.
