The following is a paid presentation for… Oh wait, wrong Blog!
The joys of posting at 6.42am I guess.
Okay, so, This is a journey into sound… Wait WRONG song Goddammit (though it IS pretty damn fine). This is actually a story about the perils of using old school music technology as opposed to dragging out an expensive laptop and controller like the Kidlets do today.
This post may or may not (in other words, absolutely) contain technical terms your grandparents may or may not have used (or even understood) decades ago while killing dinosaurs off the front lawn…
WARNING! Boring tech talk ahead, feel free to ignore!
So, a few weeks back, the SCSI drive that we save our sets onto simply seemed to stop working, bringing the band to an abrupt halt. The Kurzweil k2vx (NOT pictured left) is our entire rhythm section so it’s importance cannot be underestimated. And in an age of USB C and plug and play technology, we use a very old SCSI drive (Yes 90s technology, and we’ve gone through four of them) to load and save files to.
We could play the Kurzweil, but we couldn’t load the set from it. There is a floppy drive (It’s on older keyboards and computers and the discs look like the save icon on a PC), but that took yonks and wasn’t feasible for live performance. That said, we did get some stuff done while and we’ll be keen to present that asap.
Happily, the Kurzweil is now repaired and back in Disco HQ where she belongs, with thanks to the legend that is Steve Oh up in Greensborough for the thorough checkup and quick turnaround, and extra thanks to Pradip Sakar from Saturday afternoon PBS FM Radio show “Tiger beats, Elephant Grooves” and the band Sikander for allowing us to swap out the SCSI connector from his rack mounted Kurweil k2000r) and hopefully we’ll be back gigging soon.
